As an antioxidant, EGCG fights free radicals that damage body cells.
It is known that excessive exposure to free radicals can increase the risk of various chronic diseases, such as diabetes, Parkinson's disease, cataracts, and cancer.
2. Reducing the Risk of Food Poisoning
This benefit of banana leaves comes from their antibacterial properties.
A study published in Foods (2020) found that banana leaves contain polyphenols that have the potential to inhibit bacteria that cause food poisoning, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella.
Not only bacteria, researchers also found that these leaves can inhibit the formation of a toxic layer caused by the fungus Candida albicans.

However, it's important to remember that this research used leaves that had been extracted and their lignin content was measured, not by applying crushed leaves directly to the skin.
Therefore, you cannot use banana leaves as your sole sunscreen.

Banana leaves contain eugenol and phytol, which have the potential to inhibit the formation of cancer cells on the surface of the cervix.
This was reported in research published by Research Square (2020).
However, this study only tested banana leaf extract on cervical cancer cells in the laboratory, not on cancer patients who consumed banana leaves.
It can be concluded that further research is needed, and banana leaves cannot yet be used as the sole herbal remedy.
